Nothing could be more satisfied than watching a balsa model plane made by yourself
flying in the sky. Balsa is always considered as the the perfect primer
materials to make a model plane. If you want to learn to make a balsa model
plane, you can follow the steps below. Each step is simple and you can easily
make your own model plane by doing as the article said step by step. Some tools
need to be prepared before you start the work: a 1/16" sheet of balsa wood , a 1/32"
sheet of balsa wood (1/16" balsa can be sanded down to 1/32"), a A 1/8" sheet of
balsa wood (2 1/16" pieces can be glued together), modeling knife, wood glue,
several grades of sandpaper, a sanding block, modeling clay and so on.
Step 1
Draw the design of the model. In order to cut the outline out, draw the
outline on the balsa wood based on the design you have drawn. In order to make
the outline correctly to match your design, you can place the design over the
wood and press gently with a ball point pen. Then the design will be transfer to
the wood.
Step 2
Cut out the parts from the wood with the modeling knife. Cut as careful as
possible. And if you want to cut the wood easily, cut along the grain otherwise
it will be difficult to cut. Sand every piece into their desired shape. In order
to make the same parts of the plane is in the same shape, you can place the same
part together when you are sanding them. The power of lift is provided by the
airfoil of a wing. The shape of the airfoil should be sanded suitable to make
the wing rounded along the leading edge, widening toward the center and then
tapering almost to a point at the trailing edge.
Step 3
Use the wood glue to glue the two balsa wing halves together. Wait a few
hours to make the glue dry. Clean any dusts left with a cloth and smooth every
parts of the plane. Finally, we can assemble the plane. In order to make the
plane fly properly, you should make sure that the angle is correct. In the end,
let the glue dry after assembling then you can fly your own balsa model
plane.
